Counselor Amy Guilbeau LPC, LAC presented to the audience. Guilbeau is TRX certified and runs the exercise therapy program at Victory Addiction Recovery Center. “We wanted to showcase something that is very unique to our program,” says Guilbeau. Victory is the only treatment center in the state that offers exercise therapy administered by a licensed professional counselor and licensed addiction counselor. Guilbeau continues “It’s another tool we can use to provide dynamic treatment as well as reach clients who may not be as responsive to traditional methods of treatment.”

Guilbeau used evidence-based research and anecdotal experience to show different outcomes and successes exercise therapy can yield with clients. She also demonstrated the type of exercises she uses to explain how, and why they can have therapeutic outcomes. Guilbeau explained the process of certification, if they were interested in implementing exercise therapy in their own practice.

Evidence-based treatment and utilization of the 12 steps make up the foundation of Victory’s program. However, exercise therapy falls in line with the holistic approach which addresses the mind, body and soul of clients. Clinical Director at Victory, Kerri Cunningham, LCSW, LAC, states, “Therapeutic Fitness is one of the many offerings that make the Victory program unique.
