Even though no one wants to relapse, it happens to many. Relapse is not failure; it is a sign that you need to reconsider your approach to recovery, reconnect with a therapist and/or treatment center, and try again.
One thing you can do to help prevent relapse is to be aware of triggers and warning signs.
One relapse warning sign is when you start to think you no longer need as many meetings. Maybe you think you can work the program on your own, without connection to others in your support group. You might also find ways to criticize the program. This can happen at any point in sobriety. Struggling with the disease of addiction is like fighting something that wants to kill you. Isolating yourself will only lead to dangerous thoughts and feelings. Stay connected to your support group.
Another relapse warning sign is to start thinking that “just one” won’t hurt. In recovery we learn that one is too many and a thousand is never enough. This notion of “just one” has to be squashed immediately. This time will not be different. Trying to hold on to the idea that one day you will be able to use “safely” again is harmful. In a very real way, you are allergic to drugs or alcohol. Your body cannot tolerate them.
Finally, remember that addiction is a disease, and it is not something you chose. No one chooses to have cancer, and no one chooses to develop a substance use disorder. You are not alone. Sobriety has much to offer. Maintaining balance in all areas of recovery will help you stay focused and at peace.
