Alcohol Addiction Relapse Consequences

alcohol addiction relapse consequences - crying woman - victory addiction recovery centerThere are fewer things that produce more guilt or remorse than a relapse.

Most people in recovery don’t plan on relapsing. But when we start to feel better after getting a little bit of sobriety under our belt, we almost forget where we came from. And when the stresses of life pile up and our defenses are down, it can be all too easy to give into cravings. According to The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, up to 90% of people in recovery from alcohol addiction are likely to experience at least one relapse in the first four years following treatment. Sometimes relapse can occur after very little sober time, and in other instances it happens after decades of sobriety. There is no cure for addiction. Recovery requires daily work. Relapse is not and does not have to be a part of everyone’s story of recovery, but there’s no shame if it finds its way into your life.

Some alcohol addiction relapse consequences can appear right away or can happen over time.

When we sober up after a relapse, we tend to feel an almost overwhelming sense of guilt. This is coupled with shame and feeling as though we have disappointed the ones we love. Fortunately, relapse can ultimately lead to an awakening when we reevaluate our approach to recovery and make much-needed changes to ensure our well-being.

If you or someone you love experiences relapse, dust yourself off, make amends when necessary, and plug back in. Returning to treatment is always a healthy option.
