The withdrawal symptoms associated with opiates can be extremely uncomfortable.

More About Hydrocodone Withdrawal

Hydrocodone withdrawal in the first stage, also known as acute stage, can last anywhere from one to a few weeks. This stage is extremely uncomfortable and should only be done in a detox facility with medical supervision. The silver-lining is that even though hydrocodone withdrawal can be quite uncomfortable, it is not usually life-threatening unless the hydrocodone was mixed with other substances.

Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome

The post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS) is the second stage of withdrawal and can continue for an extended period of time.

This stage is accompanied with fewer physical symptoms, but more emotional and psychological withdrawal symptoms. Opioids like hydrocodone have a direct impact on normal brain function and create chemical imbalance. The PAWS stage is comprised of mood swings, anxiety, irritability, tiredness, variable energy, low enthusiasm, variable concentration, and disturbed sleep. These are the most common symptoms.

During both acute and post-acute stages, many factors contribute to the type and duration of withdrawal symptoms, such as the length of time the drug was used, how much was used, and whether or not it was being mixed with other mind-altering substances.

Many people don’t intend to become addicted to hydrocodone.

Hydrocodone is prescribed to alleviate pain. The euphoric feeling that accompanies the pain relief can make a person crave more of the drug than was prescribed.

One of the many problems associated with opioid addiction is that it begins to take higher doses to achieve that euphoric sensation. Once pharmaceutical medication is unable to produce the desired effect, many people turn to heroin. Many accredited facilities all over the country are experienced in managing hydrocodone withdrawal. Trained counselors, addiction specialists, therapists, and doctors can help clients through both acute withdrawal and PAWS to achieve balance. Even though it may seem like an unsurmountable task to withstand the hydrocodone withdrawal duration, it is not something you or a loved one ever have to do alone.
